Any history on how they were made their own cartoon??are they really popular on japan???The show was created by Sam Register, who also serves as the series' executive producer.According to Register, the target audience of the show is boys and girls from six to eleven years old. However, the show also has a following of fans of the real-life Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura who make up the Japanese pop duo PUFFY, known as 'Puffy AmiYumi' in North America. Register, a fan of the band, wished to spread its fame to other parts of the world and thus produced the cartoon.- WikipediaCute lil interview with PUFFY and Narduwuar. Woo They used to be. There was a period called 'PUFFY MANIA' which was similar to the the Spice Girls Craze, they were everywhere and on everything. Dolls, video-games, clothes, costumes, cups and plates, candy, multiple variety shows, a cartoon show, had floats during the MACY parades, became goodwill ambassadors.
I mean, shit. They were like the 'it' factor, not only in Japan but globally as well.Everyone can talk about how PSY, Girls' Generation, Hikaru Utada, BoA and whoever else is the one that would/will make it big in the States, but PUFFY is the only act to have not only introduced their country's genre to the world but to be so damn successful at it. PUFFY sold millions (in their ENTIRE career), toured around the world (they jut performed in Cali and Texas in 2017). And they can't even speak English.
AmiYumi was a very successful group. Most people can barely sell a single but PUFFY dropped 6 damn albums in the USA.But around 06', the momentum died (They completely left the US market) and PUFFY seemed to have disappeared though I think it' because the girls started to focus on their personal lives. Ami and Yumi are both married women (Well Yumi is twice divorced now.) with Yumi having a son (2012) and Ami with a daughter (2003).A few theme songs here, a few appearances there.
Their last album was 2011 and charted #25, which I think is pretty good (especially since they debuted in 96'). According to their website they dropped a single both this year and last but most Japanese videos and songs are blocked in the USA so I haven't heard them. Their still active and about and still do well though. Edited January 13, 2019 by JessicaRabbit.
